England beat Serbia in Euro 2024 opener

Southgate's side go top of Group C with 1-0 victory

England edged to a 1-0 victory over Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener to go top of Group C. Gareth Southgate's side impressed in the first half and took the lead through Raheem Sterling in the 25th minute. Serbia improved after the break but could not find an equaliser.

The result leaves England in a strong position in the group, with their next game against Slovenia on Thursday. Serbia, meanwhile, will need to bounce back when they face Scotland in their next match.

England started the game brightly and were quickly into their stride. They created a number of chances in the opening stages and took the lead when Sterling fired home from close range after a cross from Bukayo Saka. Serbia struggled to get into the game and were lucky not to concede again before the break.

The second half was a more even affair, with Serbia coming more into the game. They had a number of chances to equalise, but could not find a way past Jordan Pickford in the England goal. England held on for the win and will now be confident of qualifying for the knockout stages.
